The First Workshop on Resilient and Energy-Efficient Networks (RENEW’26)

It is our great pleasure to welcome you to the First International Workshop on Resilient and ENergy-Efficient netWorks (RENEW 2026), held in conjunction with the IEEE International Symposium on a World of Wireless, Mobile and Multimedia Networks (WoWMoM 2026).

As communication networks continue to evolve towards highly softwarized, virtualized, AI-driven, and cloud-native architectures, the challenges of sustainability and resilience are becoming increasingly intertwined. Modern network infrastructures must not only support ever-growing demands for connectivity, low latency, and reliability, but must also reduce their energy consumption and carbon footprint while remaining robust against failures, cyberattacks, and resource variability. RENEW 2026 was established to address this critical intersection and provide a dedicated forum for researchers, practitioners, and industry experts to discuss innovative solutions for building sustainable, resilient, and intelligent future networks.

The workshop adopts a cross-layer perspective spanning energy-efficient wireless communications, IoT systems, software-defined networking (SDN), network function virtualization (NFV), edge and cloud orchestration, AI-driven network management, carbon-aware networking, and security mechanisms for resource-constrained environments. Particular emphasis is placed on leveraging network programmability and artificial intelligence to jointly optimise energy efficiency, resilience, performance, and reliability.

We are delighted to host an inspiring keynote by Prof. Julie McCann (Imperial College London) entitled “CHEDDAR & Sustainability”, highlighting the role of interdisciplinary research in addressing sustainability challenges within future digital infrastructures. The technical programme features high-quality peer-reviewed papers and work-in-progress contributions covering emerging advances in resilient and energy-efficient networking. The workshop also includes a presentation of the EcoNGN Project, showcasing recent progress in balancing energy efficiency, carbon impact, and reliability in next-generation communication networks.

As the inaugural edition of RENEW, we are particularly encouraged by the strong interest from the research community and the quality of the submissions received. We hope this workshop will serve as the foundation for a long-lasting forum that fosters collaboration between academia, industry, and standardisation bodies working at the convergence of sustainability, resilience, and network softwarization.

We would like to sincerely thank all authors for submitting their excellent work, the Technical Program Committee members and reviewers for their dedication and valuable feedback, and the WoWMoM 2026 Organising Committee for their support in hosting this workshop.
